Annual AAYLC Conference
The African American Youth Leadership Conference inspires African American, Biracial, and Multiracial youth of African descent to become confident leaders, engaged learners, and active members of their communities. Originally launched in Marion County, the conference expanded in 2006 to include Linn, Benton, Lincoln, Lane, and Polk counties. Today, it brings together students from across Oregon to participate in workshops, celebrate culture, and connect with peers who share similar experiences and aspirations.
Each year’s conference explores topics that encourage youth to embrace their heritage, develop leadership skills, and engage in social and civic issues that impact their communities. While the conference celebrates the African American experience, youth from all backgrounds are welcome to participate in this unique learning environment.
Middle/High School Mentoring Program
The Middle/High School Mentoring Program connects students with caring mentors who provide encouragement, guidance, and positive support throughout the school year. Through meaningful relationships, students develop confidence, strengthen academic goals, explore future career pathways, and grow as leaders within their schools and communities.

Linn Benton Teen/Adult Idol Competition
The African American Youth Leadership Coalition hosts the annual Linn Benton Teen/Adult Idol competition. The competition is modeled after the well-known television program, American Idol. The competition will run four weeks providing the opportunity for one talented youth and adult to win the title of Linn Benton Idol. The event will held in the spring of each year and serves as a fundraiser for the AAYLC.
Annual Black Family BBQ
Each year, families, youth, local organizations, businesses, and community partners come together for a day of food, entertainment, games, educational resources, and meaningful connections. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the richness of African American culture while strengthening relationships across our region.
